Asbestos Management in Schools

HSE logoAsbestos caution logo

The results from last year’s school inspection programme, carried out by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) have now been published and they show that although there have been improvements on the 2010/11 inspection, compliance with the Control of Asbestos Regulations (CAR) are still not always fully understood or applied by some schools and academies.

The HSE inspected a sample of 153 non-local authority schools between April 2013 and January 2014. Asbestos Management is a legal requirement and in these types of schools, the duty holder usually is the organisation itself. The HSE website offer comprehensive step by step guidance for duty holders on how to manage asbestos. http://www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos/managing/index.htm

Despite this, 20 schools have received improvement notices from the HSE because of their inadequate control of asbestos hazards.
