Brief: Main Contractors with full responsibility for all H&S, welfare and management on site. To identify and assess asbestos material to be removed from site, subsequent asbestos removal prior to demolition of 50% of a live and occupied, building on the site.
Maylarch carried out the Asbestos removal and demolition of the Mary Marlborough Centre at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Hospital. This is a large two storey Oxford Method building situated within a live hospital site. This particular building poses similar risks to those we encountered at the Manor House site, but in addition the building is surrounded and connected to live Hospital wards, having a live basement under half of the building which remained live during our works. Due to this having had to separate the structure and carefully dismantle the building by hand and erect a scaffold screen to protect the neighbouring live buildings.
The surveying department carried out a thorough Type 3 asbestos survey, prior to the removal of asbestos and subsequent demolition works. This was followed by a month long asbestos removal programme, which comprised; removal of existing asbestos ceiling column casings, carefully dealing with areas of asbestos contamination, inc partition wall voids and service cupboards.
Careful planning, consideration and special attention were required as the lower parts of the building were live and occupied during the removal phase.
Demolition works posed several challenges - including, traffic management on a live site, as well as the specific needs and continued smooth running of the lower section of the building. Works carried out involved careful hand separation from one live building to another.
