THE SUMMARY

COMPETENCIES UTILISED:
Land Remediation

PROJECT:
Buxton Sidings

CLIENT:
Buckingham Group Contracting Limited (BGCL)

VALUE:
£750,000

The client BGCL, were commissioned by Network Rail to construct a 550 metre railway siding, enabling longer freight trains to operate at this site. The legacy of the proposed route had been a heavily contaminated tip and the primary hazard was asbestos. Adhering to a detailed remediation strategy, Maylarch were contracted to cut through the site, safely dealing with all the contaminants present, including Japanese Knotweed. With a formal agreement with the Environmental Agency in place, only bulky waste and hotspots of high-level contamination were removed from site. Lower level contaminated soil was engineered into a land form, before being covered with a specialist membrane and clean topsoil.

THE CHALLENGE

Under the supervision of the Environmental Consultant, the challenge was to maintain the safety of the workers and laypeople at all times. Using our inhouse team of Asbestos trained, Rail Industry accredited machine operators, on site, ensured compliance and high levels of H&S.

The Outcome

Maylarch safely excavated, relocated, and capped approximately 19,690m3 of contaminated soil. The works were completed 2 weeks ahead of schedule. The strategy of safely relocating the waste on site resulted in significant cost savings and significantly reduced environmental impact.
